2021started in 5th gear.
Sold my house where I have lived in the rainforest for 28 years. Packed up. Moved to Cairns. Committed to 5 exhibitions in 2021 plus a expedition of paddling down the Murray River with partner LL. Must be mad.
‘Call of the Running Tide’, went up at NorthSite Contemporary Arts Cairns on March 6th. It looked fabulous and the ‘Welcome to Country’ was one of the most moving and exciting ‘welcomes’ I have experienced. This was a peek show of selected artist with new and old works from previous Call of the Running Tide works.
Call of the Running Tide is a sculpture and multimedia group exhibition, responding to the real and dire circumstances that humanity faces due to escalating ecological and climate change. It is at Port Douglas and has had its second birthday.
Murray river paddling expedition started at Albury (Wodonga) This river is 2658km long and our longest river in Australia, and we planned to paddle our single kayaks, non- assisted some or all, of the 2500 km remaining to Adelaide. We gave ourselves March April and most of May for this. What resulted was a wonderful experience which I felt very privileged to do. Paddling and camping every night for some 800km and then, enough was enough.
After some 3 months away we headed back to Cairns to get prepared for a exhibition in Roma Queensland, at the Roma on Bungil Gallery. So we headed south again with a bulging van full of artworks. This exhibition was with a fellow artist Sandy Hablelthwait who is a wonderful ceramics artist. We called the exhibition A Compendium of Ourselves. Roma is the most pretty and welcoming inland town and we just loved it.
During the time the exhibition was open, we, LL and I, spent 6 weeks exploring National Parks of central Queensland. More camping adventuring and bicycling. And then back to Cairns.
Almost back to back upon arriving back in Cairns was the installing of the environmental exhibition at Port Douglas called Call of the Running Tide. This is its second biannual festival/exhibition and is curated by the wonderful Jill Chism.
Call of the Running Tide was a enormous success, especially considering the difficulties of Covid19 has brought to us all. The art was sensational and the support by the numbers from the far North Queenslander was fabulous.
My 5th exhibition at TimlessTextiles Newcastle NSW was postponed due the lockdowns with covid 19.
2021 was a busy and memorable year for art and adventures, on the roads less travelled, which were just awesome.
It’s now 2022 and we are again setting plans in place to head south. So lets wait and see what eventuates. Only 1 exhibition planned and that’s at TimelessTextile and will be called Tribe.
